interests
Kat likes the small things in life; the crunch of fresh snow underfoot, watching the leaves turn orange, red, brown on the branches, bird song when she’s awoken too early to name a few. But apart from these little things she also has some great joys in life.
Libraries, though she can’t put her finger on exactly what it is. She likes the collective silence, the concentration, the emptiness from the day-to-day worries that bury people down. She likes the smell of old books, how they are musty and fading, the texture of the paper under her fingers as she immerses herself in far off lands, fairytales and drama. She loves finding hidden treasures, stumbling across new talent and new authors that are little gems, undiscovered and ready to be explored.
Salted pretzels are another thing she loves. Whilst she’d had them in England, it was only when she moved to America with her ex-husband that she first began to enjoy them. She’s never had much of a sweet tooth, preferring savoury snacks any day, but there was something about a hot giant pretzel on her way home from work she wouldn’t resist. Since discovering she was pregnant it was like the teacher couldn’t get enough of them, taking advantage of her state saying they were “cravings”.
Teaching Despite the headaches she often gets from teaching students who don’t want to be there, there always comes along that one student who really gets what she’s saying, who does well in her classes and clearly enjoys exploring the written word. Inspiring students is what makes her love teaching so much.
Jogging Kat has never been much for exercise, enjoyed riding in her younger days, but was never into fitness. Since she hit mid-thirties she took up jogging just to keep a bit healthier, but has since found some joy in it. The steady rhythm, the endorphins, getting out early in the morning when the streets are empty and the sun is coming up… She tries to go for long walks now she is pregnant, but definitely misses jogging.
BBQ It’s one thing she used to enjoy about her parents and family, the big barbeques they would throw together. Since coming to America she has discovered how big of a market it is, the restaurants that get completive, family recipes closely guarded. Kat’s always enjoyed good food, but appreciates the passion and effort that goes into a good BBQ

dislikes
- Being Pregnant It may seem odd for an expecting mother to dislike being pregnant, but in Kat's case she does and very much so. She suffered badly with morning sickness, and whilst that has faded, she is now in her second trimester which means gaining weight faster, ballooning, not being able to sleep on her front or back and having to contend with the joys of heartburn all the time. Whilst she treasures the life growing inside of her, she dislikes the changes her body is going through most of the time.
Ignorance Kat hates ignorance in others. Whether it's some form of discrimination, an unwillingness to learn, or the inability to change and grow, she hates ignorance and yet sees it in the world everyday. Her greatest hate is discrimination, however, and will not stand for it in her presence or in her class.
Freshly cut grass smell She has learnt to hate this smell above all others purely because of her hayfever. She always had it, but it got worse in her 20s and now she suffers quite badly in the summer without medication. No wooing with flowers for her, she avoids cut grass and the like as much as possible.
TUrning a Blind Eye Being in a position like a teacher means you are merited with a certain amount of trust, and even more so in a boarding school. Despite being care-free and certainly not being one of the strictest of teachers, she would also not simply look the other way if she caught a student drinking or doing something illegal, especially on the grounds
Spicey Food Kat has always been a wimp with spicey food, just cannot understand how people can sit there eating a meal, red faced and sweating, and say they are enjoying themselves. She especially can't stand it since becoming pregnant, not enjoying the after effects or the heartburn

hobbies
When she isn't teaching Kat has a few hobbies. She enjoys reading, obviously, but she also enjoys walking without any real destination. Just heads out and wanders wherever the mood takes her. She does enjoy going out with friends, though she's never been on for partying, preferring going for a coffee or to the theatre.
fears & secrets
Mostly, Kat is afraid of something happening to her. Before she had Ray, then Ellis, but now it's not the men in her life but the child growing inside her. If anything happened at this stage she knows her child's chances of surviving are slim, but she's especially worried about anything happening after the birth. The birth being something else she is terrified of.
The secret she is holding tightly is the fact that she doesn't know just who fathered her child. She was still married to Ray when she fell pregnant, but after having had an affair with Richard for over a year prior, she had no way of knowing who the father is. Only Richard knew she was pregnant, and his negative reaction made him hope the baby isn't his.

personality
Kat is an easy person to get along with. She’s always friendly and makes an effort to produce a smile for her friends even on her worst days. She’s a warm person, offers her support and advice when asked for, but is tactful enough to know when to simply offer a hug and an invite round for drinks and pizza. Kat is very loyal, fiercely so, and will stick by her own to the very end. Even when those she loves are in the wrong she tends to stand by them, perhaps not defending their actions, but she won’t abandon someone for making the wrong choices. It’s hard to earn the teachers trust, but once you have it you should treasure it because once it’s broken there is no fixing it. This English woman doesn’t play baseball, there aren’t any three strikes you’re out as far as her trust goes.
As a teacher she is firm yet fair. She expects the best from her students, for them to give the best effort they can in her classroom, but she also tries to get this from them in life. Over her many years in a teaching capacity she has seen students from all walks of life, has come to learn the cliques and tendencies that roam the teenage years, but has never accepted them. She always sees the best in her pupils, even those who seem to have given up.
Despite being friendly, when it comes to strangers she can be slightly standoffish, but always tries to be polite. Kat takes her time to get to know someone, doesn’t offer parts of herself until she feels she can know this person better. She can also be stubborn and hard-headed at times, doesn’t often change her mind once it’s made, though she is always open to discussion on her opinions on things. She doesn’t have much of a temper, but she has been known to lose it on occasion when pushed to the brink. Being 18 weeks pregnant means she can be a bit hormonal at times, and snappish if she is having a bad day, but for the most part she is a good person.

history
Katherine Elizabeth Hart was born on the 5th November in Worth, England, as the only child of Jacob and Elizabeth Hart. The family was an old one from old money, Jacob breeding and training horses for shows, both jumping and dressage, as well as dabbling in breeding for the races, whilst Elizabeth volunteered for a few charities. She had the usual upbringing of someone in their class, growing with the children of her parents’ friends or colleagues, getting to know the other children of the rich and powerful. However, her Mother made the decision of sending her to public school from 11 onwards, feeling it would keep the young lady grounded and certain of just who she is, not wanting her only child to be so disconnected from the world around her.
Growing up in the two worlds was hard for her at times, and Katherine was a voluntary solitary soul, preferring her own company or that of her horse Minerva, a gentle horse she viewed as her best friend in life. She attended a finishing school at her Father’s request, and whilst she was the perfect lady, she found herself looking at her peers differently. Attending a private college she studied History and Literature, and it was here she discovered her love of the written word as well as her passion for passing on that knowledge. Deciding she wanted to teach, she enrolled at University College London, one of the top universities in the UK for any wanting to study Literature. She worked hard, dedicated herself to her studies, and it was here that she met Ray Ellis, a charming man from New Jersey, in 1992.
Things were a slow burn between the two of them, Kat (as he and countless others had begun to refer to her as) dedicated to her books and teaching whilst Ray focused on his art. They kept in touch, exchanged emails when he returned to America whilst she took on a teaching post in England. Years down the line they met again and decided to give things a real go. It was a whirlwind romance of wooing and getting to know one another, of learning each other and loving, until they finally decided to marry. They wed in Kat’s home town before moving back to Ray’s home across the pond and settling there in ’99. She took another post teaching World Literature in a local school, Ray worked as an independent artist before signing on with a few galleries, and all together life was good, only improving when she was invited to become a deputy head at her school. In 2011 things had grown stale between the two, Kat turned 40 and she wondered just what she was doing with her life. She wasn’t teaching as much, doing mostly admin, and she and Ray had grown apart somewhat.
And then she met Richard Hammer. Much younger than she was, the lawyer was suave and educated, closer to her own background then Ray was, and was just so alive and energetic. He was a go-getter, awoke that long-lost youthful energy in the woman, until one night in February there were too many drinks in a crowded bar and she woke the next day in his bed. Despite knowing it was wrong, so very wrong, Kat couldn’t regret having done so. Nor could she bring herself to feel guilty to the endless encounters she shared with Richard over the next year. Finally realising she couldn’t continue to drag Ray along, despite still loving him and having built a life with him in America, she filed for divorce at the end of June 2013.
Barely 4 weeks later she was wondering glazed eyed from her doctors having just heard the ‘good news’; she was pregnant. About 6 weeks apparently, so that left the parentage open Kat was ashamed to admit. Not being able to face Ray, she went straight to Richards and told him the news. The lawyer freaked out, claiming her wasn’t ready to be a father, that she had only just divorced her husband, ignoring the fact that they had been sleeping with each other for over a year and had known each other as friends outside of the bedroom. It was then she realised how very stupid she’d been, letting being chased by a younger man sweep her away from what was important in life, for letting him ruin the beautiful life she’d had. Taking what few possessions she’d owned, Kat left without a word to either of the men in her life, both a part of her past now.
She received an Interview to fill the post at Brentwood Academy in July, accepted the position and started in September.

Why can I hear birdsong? Katherine thought to herself, screwing her eyes shut tighter, fighting the pull from slumber back to the land of the coherent. Giving up and coming back to herself slowly, she opened her eyes and sighed at the sight of her coffee table sideways in her position on the sofa. “Great!” She muttered to herself, shifting her weight slightly, wincing at her slightly numb arm that she’d apparently laid on. Licking dry lips as she sat up, Kat stretched her back, groaning at the achy muscles from sleeping in a cramped position. It wasn’t the first, and no doubt wouldn’t be the last, time she’d fallen asleep on her sofa marking after a long day and being on housing duty, but it was getting harder the further along into her pregnancy she got.
Looking out at her slightly protruding stomach, she guessed she should be thankful as some women were a lot larger at her stage. Running her fingers over her creased shirt, feeling the hard bump underneath, she sighed before getting up and heading for a shower, hoping the low-caffeine coffee she had in her cupboards would be enough to keep her going through the day. Glancing at her bedside clock as she got dried, she almost cringed upon realising that it was still very early, earlier than she normally rose. Kat had just finished doing her trousers up when she felt the bed decompress next to her. Glancing down, she smiled fondly and scratched Bovary under her chin, nose scrunching up as the kitten rolled over onto her back. She’d had a few dogs growing up, but really they were her Father’s dogs, and whilst she had Minerva her horse, this was the first pet she’d gone out and bought on her own. She doubted her parents would approve as they weren’t cat people, but she thought little Bovary was adorable. One last scratch and she rose from the bed to go and feed the little bundle of fluffy and to rustle up something for herself.
Finally emerging into the bright day, coffee in hand, she headed off to the main building to prepare for her first class of the day. She had only been teaching at Brentwood Academy for a month now but was settling in nicely. There were the usual cliques as there were in every school, but she was still figuring the place out. It was an amazing school, was obviously dedicated to its students, but she couldn’t help feeling like there was something different about this place to the last school she had taught in. She put it down to it being her first boarding school in America, figuring things would settle in time and, to an extent, blamed her pregnancy. The school had been fine with her condition, but even after knowing she was carrying a little life inside her for the last 12 weeks she still hadn’t fully comprehended just what that would mean to her life. 41 was old to be starting a family, but she supposed it couldn’t be helped.
Stepping into the warmth of the building, Kat turned a corner to head to her classroom, completely oblivious to her surroundings, when she very nearly ran headlong into something coming the opposite reaction. She let out a small exclamation of surprise as she stopped short, free hand instinctively settling over her expanding stomach, as she stepped back. Brushing her long locks from her eyes, her eyes settled on whomever it had been that was rushing, slipping into teacher mode with a raised eyebrow. “A bit early to be rushing around, don’t you think?” Kat asked, shifting the books in her arms a little higher as they began to slip. There hadn’t been any harm done, she just wished everyone wasn’t in such a rush all the time to get around.
